Life Story
Robert W. England was a noted Christchurch architect who was born in Lyttleton in 1863.  He trained in England, returning to establish what became one of the city’s significant practices.
In the early 1900s he took his younger brother Edward into the practice with him. England Brothers, as the firm was known, designed a considerable number of commercial and domestic buildings – particularly in the Merivale and Fendalton areas and North Canterbury station homesteads.
Notable works are McLean’s Mansion, Riccarton House (the 1900 section), the DIC building in Cashel Street, the A J White building in High / Tuam Streets, Knox Church and St Albans Methodist Church.
On his death he was survived by his wife and six children.
