Captain Leslie Huldbert [sic] (killed) was well known, in Christchurch, being the son of C. P. Hulbert, at one time Mayor of this city. Prior to enlisting, he was in the service of Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co., Wellington as accountant. On the outbreak of war he was attached to the Garrison Artillery Wellington and after serving in the forts left New Zealand with the 1st Howitzer Battery to leave these shores with the rank of lieutenant. He served in Egypt and Gallipoli and at the time of his death was in charge of a trench mortar division in France. He has three other brothers on active service, one, Major E G Huldbert, [sic] being at present in Egypt.[1]

Leslie’s Cenotaph database record:

Mayor for the years 1884 and 1885, was a conspicuous figure in business and social circles in Christchurch for many years. He came to New Zealand from Australia and joined the “rush” on the Otago goldfields. Mr. Hulbert also went through the Maori war, for which he received the New Zealand war medal. He was subsequently in business in High Street for many years. Mr. Hulbert afterwards went to Wellington, where he still resides. [2]

Charles Patridge HULBERT also helped found the Queens Jubilee Home [elderly persons home in Woolston, Christchurch – no longer existing christchurchcitylibraries.com/heritage/photos/disc13/IMG0… ]
